Couples Therapy Q & A

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy focused on improving the health of romantic relationships. Whether you’re married, in a long-term relationship, or dating, couples therapy can enhance many aspects of your relationship.

Also called couples counseling, the goal of couples therapy is to identify and resolve conflicts through open communication and guidance from a trained mental health professional.

Participating in couples therapy gives you and your partner an opportunity to discuss problems in your relationship from a new perspective.

As an objective party, your therapist helps you communicate with your partner in a healthy way, so you can have constructive conversations about your relationship.

What relationship issues can couples therapy resolve?

Even if you have a generally healthy relationship, you can still benefit from couples therapy. In these sessions, Steven and the Worrier 2 Warrior team use targeted strategies to help you and your partner feel fulfilled, understood, and secure in your relationship.

Many couples seek counseling to work through specific problems in their relationship, such as:

  • Communication problems
  • Infidelity
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Loss of interest
  • Substance abuse
  • Financial issues
  • Anger problems
  • Mental health disorders
  • Parenting difficulties

Not every relationship is meant to last a lifetime, but couples therapy can help you decide how to proceed with your partner and make healthy decisions regarding your future.

What happens during couples therapy?

Because couples therapy is about both you and your partner, you may have joint and individual sessions with Steven and the team. During your intake session, Steven asks both of you questions about your relationship.

This get-to-know-you appointment allows Steven and the team to collect valuable information about you as a couple and as individuals. Nearly all couples have specific reasons for seeing a therapist. It’s important to be open and honest about why you’re seeking professional guidance.

To help you and your partner build better relationship skills, Steven and the team use targeted interventions to:

  • Set short-term and long-term goals
  • Practice stress management
  • Improve communication skills
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Repair broken trust
  • Build friendship
  • Increase intimacy and closeness

Most couples therapy sessions last for about 45 minutes. While Steven conducts most sessions through teletherapy, in-person visits are available upon request.
